CrossFit OKC is proud to have Miss Carlie Mae as our first athlete of the month for 2013! Carlie has brought so much enthusiasm and positivity to the gym since her arrival this fall. Get to know a little bit more about Carlie in her own words!
Anytime is a good time to make a change.
For years I was in awe of CrossFitters. I would watch YouTube videos about it, catch some of The Games on ESPN, and ask so many questions when I would meet someone who did CrossFit. I made so many excuses about why I couldn’t do it – too overweight, bad joints, didn’t want to get “bulky,” can’t run, blah blah blah. The thing was, I didn’t make excuses for anything else in my life. If I wanted something I would work as hard as possible to reach my goals. Taking care of others is a passion of mine, but I wouldn’t take care of myself. This past summer I quit making excuses and realized that if I didn’t start taking care of my health now, I never would. A friend told me how much he loved CrossFit OKC, and so I joined On Ramp in September.
Right from the beginning I became a CrossFitter for life. Kristen’s On Ramp class was amazing, and she introduced me to a healthier mindset and lifestyle. When I finally got over my fear of taking carbs out of my diet and tried Paleo, I realized that my digestive system is much happier without gluten. My stress level went down, I made amazing friends at the box, and I learned how to challenge myself in ways I never thought I could. I started having better balance of personal and work life and made my mental and physical health a priority. To say that I’ve become slightly obsessed with CrossFit in the past couple months is an understatement – I’ve drank the Kool Aid and I’ve been trying to pass it around to all of my friends and family.
When people see photos of me before I joined CrossFit they always want to know how much weight I’ve lost. Prior to doing CrossFit I would have been proud to tell them down to the tenth of a pound. I’m still proud of myself for making a huge change in my life, but CrossFit has changed my mindset on the definition of health and fitness. I don’t care how much I weigh. What I’m really proud of are my PR numbers – all of my 1RM weights, getting my first kipping pull-up, learning how to do a handstand, the first time I Rx’d a WOD, doing my first competition, coming in with Kelsey for two-a-days during my school break, box jumps, well . . . you all know exactly what I mean. I’m preaching to the choir, because anyone who does CrossFit knows what’s important.
I’ve made a lot of New Year’s resolutions this year, and many of them include CrossFit goals. At the top of my list is to express my gratitude to all the people who helped me change my life. Ginny, Drew, Bryan, Kristen, Kenny, Jo, Carl, Katy, Kameron, - you are all amazing coaches and I am so lucky to have you push me every day. To all my fellow CrossFit OKC members – thank you so very much for cheering me on, telling me I can do more, and being part of the greatest group of people I’ve met in OKC.
